1. Change a light: Replace an incandescent bulb with a compact fluorescent. Annual carbon dioxide reduction: about 150 pounds.
2. Drive less: If at all possible, walk, bike, carpool, or take mass transit. Carbon dioxide reduction: one pound per mile you don't drive.
3. Recycle more: Before you trash packaging, check to see if it's recyclable in your municipality. Annual carbon dioxide reduction: 2,400 pounds in the average household that recycles half its trash.
4. Check your tires: Keeping tires properly inflated can improve gas milage by more than 3%. Carbon dioxide reduction: 20 pounds for every gallon of gasoline you save.
5. Use less hot water: install a low-flow showerhead. Annual carbon dioxide reduction: 350 pounds in the average home.
6. Change to rechargeables: Keep toxins out of landfills by using rechargeable batteries in all your portable electronics.
7. Adjust your thermostat: Move your thermostat down just two degrees in the winter and up just two degrees in the summer. Annual carbon dioxide reduction: 2,000 pounds in a typical home.
8. Plant a tree: A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.
9. Turn off electronic devices: You can switch off a room's worth of appliances at once with a power strip (or a nifty "Squid.") Even when equipment such as your stereo is off, display clocks and status lights continue to use energy.
10. Invest in strong, reusable totes: Made from polyethylene, plastic shopping bags are not biodegradable and are making their way into our oceans and waterways.
